Island Escapes – San Juans and More

Located almost on the U.S. Canadian border, the San Juan Islands can be accessed from the UK via Seattle or Vancouver and make a great part of a cross-border trip including Victoria BC. As an island nation, many British visitors have a natural attraction to archipelagos, particularly ones which offer such variety and relaxation as the San Juans, and islands even closer to Seattle in Puget Sound.

The islands are rich in British American history, and the best centre on earth for orca whale-watching voyages. They offer wonderful undulating terrain for leisurely cycling, great kayak trips, sailing, plus gentler options such as driving the San Juan Islands Scenic Byway or relaxed boutique shopping.  Here is a selection of appealing activities on offer during different seasons:

May is history month.  Guided walking tours, local history talks and other special events attract visitors and residents alike, and portray, celebrate and remember past island lives. HISTORY LIVES HERE


The Orcas Island Cider & Mead Festival, has music, a farmers’ market and a selection of the best ciders and meads from the Northwest and beyond.

There are too many memorable places to stay. For example, Pebble Cove Organic Farm on Orcas Island offers a family suite with a large deck onto 180 degree waterfront views. Farm animals include goats chickens and a pony.  Pick berries and beans from the garden and soak in the hot tub under the stars. Wake to a breakfast of grass-fed milk and homemade granola.

Over Labor Day weekend at the start of September more than 30 studios on Lopez Island open to the public for artists to discuss their visions and techniques with the public.


From the September equinox to mid November the annual Savor the San Juans provides some of the coolest farm tours in the Pacific Northwest which take place on Lopez, Orcas and San Juan Islands.

Friday Harbor Film Festival is held Friday to Sunday in late October.

For those with less holiday time, islands further south such as Vashon, Bainbridge or Whidbey offer getaways for a day or two accessible via bridges or very short ferry rides.
